Mark E. Newell

Mark E. Newell, of McLean, Va., is in his seventh year as a member of the USGA Executive Committee and second as president. He previously served as general counsel to the USGA in 2011 and 2012, and as treasurer in 2014 and 2015.
Newell received a bachelor’s degree from Albion College in 1977. In 1981, he received both a master’s of public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, Newell served as editor and treasurer of the Harvard Law Review.
Newell is retired from Latham & Watkins LLP, having served as the vice chairman and chief operating partner from 2002 to 2011. He served on the firm’s executive committee from 1999-2011, and was managing partner of the Washington D.C. office from 1993-2000. Newell previously served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. from 1982 to 1983.
In 2019, Newell will serve on the Compensation committee.
