The USGA is a founding partner of The First Tee, a national non-profit organization of more than 200 chapters with the mission of impacting the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. Having provided more than $21 million to The First Tee chapters and more than $5 million to the home office, the USGA is the largest financial supporter of the organization. The USGA also provides The First Tee with substantial promotional assistance via USGA championship broadcasts.
The First Tee has reached more than 3 million young people since its founding in 1997. The First Tee participants are approximately 50% minority as compared to 16% minority participation among all golf participants. The First Tee offers participants a myriad of opportunities beyond standard programming, including leadership academies, mentoring programs, scholarships, and competitions. Additionally, The First Tee offers chapter leaders and instructors with a variety of training opportunities.
