Hill Adams, 55, of Katy, Texas, has been a Golf Digest Course Ranking Panelist since 1999. Adams was a member of the City Council of Katy, serving three terms. He has won two club championships, one at Pine Forest Country Club in Houston and one at The Club at Falcon Point in Katy.
Dan Arvanitis, 59, of Manchester, N.H., is competing in his first USGA Senior Amateur and his 12th USGA championship. In 2003, he competed in the USGA State Team alongside his son Matt, the head men’s and women’s golf coach at the University of Southern New Hampshire. Dan won the 2001 New Hampshire Amateur and is a four-time New Hampshire Mid-Amateur champion and a 12-time Manchester City champion.
Mike Bell, 66, of Indianapolis, Ind., captured the 2006 USGA Senior Amateur Championship and is competing in his ninth Senior Amateur and 20th USGA championship. Bell won the 2013 Indiana PGA Senior Open, one of his six state titles. He underwent double-bypass heart surgery in March 2003 and qualified for the U.S. Senior Open in June 2003. A former Evans Scholar, Bell is a member of the Indiana Golf Association Hall of Fame.
Jay Blumenfeld, 61, of Parsippany, N.J., is the current club champion at Mountain Ridge Country Club (site of the 2012 Senior Amateur) and was the New Jersey State Golf Association Player of the Year in 2006 and 2009. He won the Metropolitan Golf Association Senior Amateur in 2007 and was runner-up in 2010. Blumenfeld, who is competing in his third USGA Senior Amateur, tied for 13th in the 2012 British Senior Open Amateur Championship.
Mike Booker, 58, of The Woodlands, Texas, is a two-time melanoma cancer survivor who has founded an endowment to aid research. He reached the Round of 32 at the 2011 USGA Senior Amateur and advanced to the first round of match play in 2010 and 2012. Booker was named the 2012 Texas Senior Player of the Year and won the 2013 Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play tournament.
Mills Brown, 60, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Rusty Brown, 56, of Phoenix, Ariz., are one of two pairs of brothers competing in the USGA Senior Amateur. This is the second USGA championship they have entered together, having previously competed in the 1975 U.S. Amateur, where Mills advanced to the second round of match play and Rusty advanced to the third.
Rick Cloninger, 56, of Fort Mill, S.C., has represented Florida (1995), Georgia (1999, 2001) and South Carolina (2007) in the USGA State Team Championship. He has also won the Mid-Amateur championship in all three states: Florida (1992), Georgia (2001, 2002), and South Carolina (2003). In 2012, Cloninger won the North & South Senior Amateur, the Carolinas Senior Amateur and the South Carolina Senior Amateur.
David Delich, 56, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was a member of the U.S. National Hockey Team from 1978 to 1980 and played four years of hockey at Colorado College. He is a three-time Colorado State Senior Amateur champion and competed in the 2008 U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor in his hometown.
Don Donatoni, 65, of Malvern, Pa., is known as Father Time at his home course, White Manor Country Club, where he has won 18 club championships, including eight senior events. He won the Pennsylvania State Senior Match Play tournament in 2010. He once hitchhiked to Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey to watch an exhibition match between Arnold Palmer and Tony Lema.
James Dunn, 64, of Collinsville, Ill., competed in his first USGA championship more than 40 years ago, the 1966 U.S. Junior Amateur. He also played in the 1979 U.S. Amateur Public Links, the 1998 and 2001 U.S. Mid-Amateurs, and the 2011 U.S. Senior Open. A graduate of Notre Dame, he is an investment manager.
Don Erickson III, 61, of Dubois, Pa., is the president of the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association. He won the Western Pennsylvania Senior Amateur in 2007 and was the runner-up in the Western Pennsylvania Amateur in 1994. This is his 15th USGA championship; he previously competed in seven U.S. Amateurs, six U.S. Mid-Amateurs, and the 2010 USGA Senior Amateur.
Brady Exber, 57, of Las Vegas, Nev., is a member of the Southern Nevada Golf Hall of Fame and a nine-time region player of the year. Exber, who has represented Nevada nine times at the USGA Men’s State Team Championship, qualified for match play in the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur and tied for 41st at the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. This is his 18th USGA championship.
Buzz Fly, 58, of Memphis, Tenn., won the 2013 Tennessee Senior Match Play Championship and the 2013 Yamaha TGA/TPGA Senior Players Tournament. He is also a five-time Memphis Senior Amateur champion. Fly’s younger son, Jonathan, won the 2010 Tennessee State Amateur and the 2011 Tennessee State Open, and his eldest son, Stephen, was a two-time track and field All-American at Auburn.
James Gallagher, 55 of Yorktown, Va., served 27 years of active duty with the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a colonel in 2008. He was a five-time member of the USA team in the U.S. Air Force v. Royal Air Force Challenge Cup, captaining the 2000 team and serving as co-captain in 2004. Gallagher was the 2011 Golfweek Senior Amateur Tour national champion and competed in the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Marvin Vinny Giles III, 70, of Richmond, Va., won the 2009 USGA Senior Amateur and 1972 U.S. Amateur. In a decorated amateur career, Giles served as captain of the 1992 USA World Amateur Team and the 1993 USA Walker Cup Team. A three-time U.S. Amateur runner-up, Giles played on four USA Walker Cup and three World Amateur Teams. This is his 56th USGA championship.
Steve Golliher, 58, of Knoxville, Tenn., was a quarterfinalist in the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur, his first appearance in the championship. This is his 11th USGA championship, having previously competed in five U.S. Amateurs and four U.S. Mid-Amateurs. Golliher has made two holes-in-one that could have won him two new cars, but he refused the prizes to retain his amateur status.
Doug Hanzel, 56, of Savannah, Ga., became the first golfer to qualify for match play in the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur, and USGA Senior Amateur in the same year (2012). He has been the low amateur at the U.S. Senior Open for two consecutive years (2012 and 2013) and advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur. A physician who specializes in pulmonary critical care, Hanzel uses an insulin pump to control diabetes.
William Heffernan, 59, of Dover, Mass., is an accomplished competitive sailor, having won the 2010 Rhodes 19 Sailboat National Championship with his wife and crewmate Renee. The duo also won three national titles in the Town Class Sailboat division in the early 1990s. This is Heffernan’s first USGA championship.
David Jacobsen, 59, of Portland, Ore., is the older brother of 2004 U.S. Senior Open champion Peter Jacobsen. He is playing in his 14th USGA championship and third Senior Amateur; he advanced to the second round of match play at last year’s championship. Jacobsen, who works for UBS Financial Services, won the 2012 Oregon Mid-Amateur.
Jim Knoll, 61, of Sunnyvale, Calif., was a semifinalist in the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur, where he lost to champion Paul Simson. He was named the Northern California Golf Association Senior Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
Robert Kain, 64, of Cleveland, Ohio, is playing in his fourth USGA Senior Amateur. He played collegiate tennis at the University of Virginia. He is married to 1984 Olympic figure skating silver medalist Rosalyn Sumners and is the former CEO of IMG Sports Agency.
Louis Lee, 57, of Heber Springs, Ark., and Stanford Lee, 60, of Tumbling Shoals, Ark., both recent USGA Senior Amateur champions, are one of two pairs of brothers competing in the 2013 championship. Louis won the 2011 USGA Senior Amateur, defeating his brother in the quarterfinals en route to becoming the second-youngest champion, and Stan won the 2007 championship. They are one of five sets of brothers who have won USGA championships.
James Lehman, 55, of Minnetonka, Minn., is competing in his ninth USGA championship and his first Senior Amateur. He has played in five U.S. Mid-Amateurs; his best finish was in 2007 when he advanced to the Round of 16 at Bandon Dunes. He is the older brother of PGA Tour and Champions Tour professional golfer Tom Lehman.
Randal Lewis, 56, of Alma, Mich., won the 2011 U.S. Mid-Amateur and was the runner-up in the same championship in 1996. He advanced to the third round of match play in the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur. The Golf Association of Michigan named Lewis its Player of the Decade for the 1990s, and he was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2009.
David Lind, 64, of Burr Ridge, Ill., was a quadriplegic for three months in 2012 due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a condition that affects the nervous system.. Lind, the runner-up at the 1987 and 1992 U.S. Mid-Amateurs, won the national speed skating championship as a high school senior.
Chip Lutz, 58, of Reading, Pa., advanced to the USGA Senior Amateur semifinals in 2010 and 2011, and he qualified for match play in 2012. He has won the Canadian Men’s Senior Amateur twice (2011 and 2012).
George Buddy Marucci Jr., 61, of Villanova, Pa., won the 2008 Senior Amateur Championship. He was the 1995 U.S. Amateur runner-up, losing to Tiger Woods in the final at Newport (R.I.) Country Club. Marucci was a member of two USA Walker Cup Teams, in 1995 and 1997, and served as captain in 2007 and 2009, the latter at his home course, Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. This is his 46th USGA championship.
Steve Melnyk, 66, of Jacksonville, Fla., represented the USA in the 1969 and 1971 Walker Cup Matches. He won the 1969 U.S. Amateur, finishing five strokes ahead of Marvin Vinny Giles, who was his foursomes partner in both of those Walker Cups. Melnyk also won the 1971 British Amateur and competed in eight U.S. Opens before becoming a golf broadcaster for more than two decades. A two-time All-American at the University of Florida, Melnyk became a reinstated amateur in 2009.
John Montross, 57, of Reno, Nev., spent seven years working as a professional skydiving guide and instructor, making more than 4,500 jumps in that period. He made two holes-in-one at the 2011 USGA Senior Amateur qualifier at Red Hawk Hills Course in Sparks, Nev. He is the 2012 Nevada Senior Amateur champion.
Pat O’Donnell, 59, of Happy Valley, Ore., was a quarterfinalist in the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur. He had previously competed in two USGA Senior Amateurs, advancing to the Round of 16 in 2009 and the Round of 32 in 2011. O’Donnell has won the Oregon Senior Stroke Play tournament five out of the past six years (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012) and the Oregon Senior Amateur in 2008 and 2010.
Mike Peck, 56, of Irving, Texas, was a member of the 1979 USA Walker Cup Team and competed in the 1981 and 1983 U.S. Opens. He competed in five U.S. Amateurs, with his best finish in 1978 when he advanced to the semifinals. Peck played collegiate golf for Stanford and was a four-time All-American and a two-time Pac-8 champion. He won the 1991 Texas State Open and the 2013 West Texas Senior Amateur.
Philip Pleat, 57, of Nashua, N.H., was the runner-up at the 2011 USGA Senior Amateur. A vice president and financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, Pleat and his son, James, both played at the 2012 U.S. Amateur.
Greg Reynolds, 66, of Grand Blanc, Mich., won the 2002 USGA Senior Amateur, finished as a runner-up in 2004, and has reached the quarterfinal round on three other occasions. In the 2012 Senior Amateur he advanced to the second round of match play, before losing to runner-up Curtis Skinner. Reynolds, a Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member, played the first two rounds with Arnold Palmer in the legendary golfer’s final U.S. Senior Open in 2005.
Mike Rice, 73, of Houston, Texas, won the USGA Senior Amateur Championship in 2005 and is playing in his 12th Senior Amateur. In the 2012 Senior Amateur he advanced to the second round of match play. He is a three-time Texas Senior Amateur champion and a two-time Senior Porter Cup champion.
Paul Simson, 62, of Raleigh, N.C., won the 2010 and 2012 USGA Senior Amateurs and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2011. Simson, who has claimed three British Senior Open Amateur titles, is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He has won 25 Carolinas Golf Association championships. He also qualified for the 1998 U.S. Open.
Allan Small, 61, of Florham Park, N.J., has won the New Jersey Senior Amateur four of the last five years (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012) and is the only golfer who has won the New Jersey Amateur (2004), Mid-Amateur (1986, 2006) and Senior Amateur. He also won the 2009 Metropolitan Golf Association Senior Amateur and served as the organization’s president in 2009 and 2010. Small is the assistant men’s golf coach at Seton Hall University.
Neil Spitalny, 62, of Chattanooga, Tenn., is competing in his fifth consecutive USGA Senior Amateur; his best finish was his first appearance in 2009 where he lost in the second round of match play. He advanced to the Round of 64 in 2011 and 2012. Spitalny played collegiate golf for the University of Michigan and was named All-Big Ten.
David Szewczul, 59, of Farmington, Conn., reached the Round of 32 at the 2010 Senior Amateur and the Round of 64 in 2012. A four-time Connecticut State Golf Association Senior Player of the Year, Szewczul is a member of the state’s Golf Hall of Fame and was named the 2012 Connecticut Player of the Year. Szewczul was also the oldest player in this year’s U.S. Amateur.
Pat Tallent, 60, of Vienna, Va., was the runner-up at the 2010 USGA Senior Amateur and reached the Round of 64 last year. Tallent, who was the low amateur at the 2004 U.S. Senior Open, was selected in the sixth round of the 1976 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets after an outstanding collegiate career at George Washington University.
Rick Ten Broeck, 65, of Evergreen Park, Ill., is competing in his fifth USGA Senior Amateur and his 21st USGA championship. He played collegiate golf for the University of Arizona and won the Illinois Open in 1973 and 1981. His younger brother, Lance, is a professional golfer who has competed on the PGA Tour and is currently active on the Champions Tour.
Jon Tingley, 55, of Osprey, Fla., played collegiate golf for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and was a two-time Division III All-American in 1979 and 1980. He was also the All-Navy Champion in 1984. He is the only amateur to win the New Jersey Senior Open, in 2010. Tingley also won the 2013 Metropolitan Golf Association Senior Amateur.
Michael Turner, 56, of Sherman Oaks, Calif., is a four-time Los Angeles City champion, winning his first title in 1987 and his fourth 25 years later in 2012. He is also a seven-time winner of the Southern California Public Links Championship, his victories spanning 1986 to 2000. Turner has competed in nine USGA championships; this is his first USGA Senior Amateur.
Ron Vannelli, 65, of Edison, N.J., is playing in his 12th USGA championship and his fifth USGA Senior Amateur. Vannelli, who started playing golf at age 24, is a commercial real estate broker. He won the 2008 and 2012 Metropolitan Golf Association Senior Amateurs as well as the 1998, 2002, and 2005 New York City Senior Amateurs.
Martin West, 65, of Rockville, Md., was a member of two USA Walker Cup Teams, in 1973 and 1979. He also competed in the 1972 World Amateur Team Championship. West, who is a financial advisor for Brown Advisory, finished sixth at the 1971 U.S. Amateur and fourth in 1972. This is his fourth USGA Senior Amateur; in 2012, he qualified for match play.
George Zahringer, 60, of New York City, was runner-up at the 2008 USGA Senior Amateur. He won the 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur at the age of 49 after making the final the previous year. At the time, he was the oldest winner of the Mid-Amateur; Randal Lewis, 54, surpassed that mark in 2011. Zahringer was a member of the 2003 USA Walker Cup Team. An 11-time Metropolitan Golf Association champion, Zahringer was low amateur at the 2005 and 2007 U.S. Senior Opens. He competed in the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur, where he advanced to the second round of match play.
