FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Angel Yin, 15, of Arcadia, Calif., has added her name to the United States Golf Association record books, carding 13-under 131 in stroke-play qualifying and earning medalist honors at the 2014 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, being conducted at Forest Highlands Golf Club.

Yin’s 131 is the second-lowest 36-hole score in both U.S. Girls’ Junior and USGA amateur championship history. Taylore Karle shot a 130 at the 2005 Girls’ Junior conducted at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho. Danny Green also returned a 131 at the 2004 U.S. Amateur Public Links held at Rush Green Creek Golf Course in Maple Grove, Minn.

Yin followed Monday’s 66 with a 7-under 65 on Tuesday, which is not only her personal best, but also ties the women’s record on Forest Highlands’ Meadow Course. They are honors that Yin called exciting.

(It’s) one of my big accomplishments, said Yin, who competed in the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run. That tells me that I know the course better than other people and maybe I have more of an advantage in this tournament.

There was an 11-for-8 playoff to fill the final spots in the 64-player match-play bracket, with the cut coming at 6-over 150. Ten players advanced to the second playoff hole; however, the playoff was suspended due to darkness with only five players completing the hole. The playoff will resume on Wednesday at 7 a.m. MST.

Following Monday’s success, Yin came into the day with very modest expectations.

To shoot even par, said Yin of her goal for the final qualifying round. I’ve never really handled pressure that well.

Yin again capitalized on her tremendous length off the tee, made even longer by the thin air found in Flagstaff, which sits at nearly 7,000 feet above sea level. She is able to hit all par-5s on the course in two, provided she hits a good shot.

In a round packed with eight birdies, Yin actually pointed to a par on the 16th hole as the highlight of her round. After hooking her tee shot way left, she punched out and hit her pitching wedge to 3 feet.

It doesn’t sound exciting, but… said Yin with a wry smile.

Three-time Women’s Mexican Amateur champion Marijosse Navarro, 17, of Mexico, sits in second at 8-under 136. She shot a bogey-free 66, opening with six birdies in her first nine holes and cruising in from there.

Navarro already has a semester of college golf under her belt, joining the Texas A&M team for the spring season and finishing sixth at the 2014 NCAA Division I Championship held at Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club, site of the 2015 U.S. Girls’ Junior.

Mariel Galdiano, 15, of Pearl City, Hawaii, earned solo third at 3-under 141. She made three birdies to three bogeys for an even-par round of 72.

While not happy with a few mistakes, the two-time U.S. Women’s Open competitor was overall content with her performance.

I made some good comeback par putts, so that helped keep me together, said Galdiano, who attends the Punahou School, which counts President Barack Obama and reigning U.S. Women’s Open champion Michelle Wie among its alumni. I definitely could have shot at least one or two under today.

Four players sit at 2-under 142: Bethany Wu, 17, of Diamond Bar, Calif.; Kathleen Scavo, 16, of Benicia, Calif.; Gigi Stoll, 17, of Tigard, Ore.; and Princess Mary Superal, 17, of the Philippines.

Wu, who fell in the 2013 Girls’ Junior semifinals to eventual runner-up Lakareber Abe, carded the low round of the morning wave. Her 4-under 68 included five birdies against one bogey.

The ultimate goal is to make it to the finals since I missed it last year, said Wu, who has verbally committed to attend UCLA in the fall of 2015.

Local favorite Hannah O’Sullivan, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., is one of seven players tied for 11th at 1-under 143. She is joined by Andrea Lee, who made the cut at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, and Lilia Khatu Vu, who made the cut at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Last week’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links runner-up Eun Jeong Seong struggled in her second round, making a triple-bogey at the fifth hole and a double-bogey at the par-4 16th. However, her 4-over total of 148 was enough to qualify for match play.

The 2014 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play followed by six rounds of match play. The championship is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final at 9:30 a.m. MST on Saturday.

The U.S. Girls’ Junior is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
