PLAYER NOTES:
Ken Bakst, 56, of Riverhead, N.Y., is playing in his 23rd USGA championship but first since 2007. He won the 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur by defeating Rick Stimmel, 1 up, in the final at Dallas Athletic Club. Bakst, who owns and operates a real estate company, is a developer and managing member at Friar’s Head, a golf club on Long Island. Bakst, who played in the 1998 Masters, is competing in his 15th Mid-Amateur.
Christopher Baloga, 31, of Baltimore, Md., is entering his fifth year as head golf coach at Loyola University in Maryland. Baloga, the 2014 Patriot League coach of the year, made a par on the fifth playoff hole at the Carlisle, Pa., sectional qualifier to earn a spot in the field. Baloga, this year’s Maryland State Amateur runner-up, had two players from his current Loyola team play in the 2014 U.S. Amateur.
Bradley Bastion, 29, of Shelby Township, Mich., is playing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur after he advanced to the quarterfinals last year at the Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.). He also competed in the 2010 U.S. Amateur Public Links and was named 2013 Golf Association of Michigan player of the year. Bastion, who works as a financial advisor, plays ice hockey in the winter.
Kevin Beavers, 30, of Seattle, Wash., is a tool engineer for Boeing and is playing in his first USGA championship. He earned a master’s in mechanical engineering from Washington State University and wrote a 174-page thesis titled, Understanding the Factors Affecting the Mechanical Properties of Marine Composites. Beavers is the boys’ golf coach at Kamiak High School, in Mukilteo, Wash.
John Brennan, 35, of Audubon, Pa., is a social studies teacher and boys’ tennis coach at Spring-Ford High School. Brennan, who is competing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur, guided the Rams to the school’s first conference tennis title in 2013. He also coached the area and conference player of the year (Patrick Pascual) in 2014. As a golfer, Brennan claimed this year’s Philadelphia Cricket Club championship and the 2012 Golf Association of Philadelphia Mid-Amateur.
Tommy Brennan, 53, of Covington, La., is playing in his 24th USGA championship, including 14 U.S. Mid-Amateurs. He was the 1994 Mid-Amateur runner-up, losing to Tim Jackson, 1 up, in the final at Hazeltine National, in Chaska, Minn. Brennan qualified for this year’s U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National, in Edmond, Okla. He works as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch and served as president of the Louisiana Golf Association from 1996-2000.
T.J. Brudzinski, 53, of Columbus, Ohio, is competing in his sixth U.S. Mid-Amateur. He is a senior vice president of sales for D.A. Davidson Companies, an employee-owned investment service firm. His brother, Bob, was an NFL linebacker for 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams (1977-80) and Miami Dolphins (1981-89) who played in two Super Bowls on Miami’s Killer Bees defense.
Todd Burgan, 45, of Powell, Tenn., is playing in his seventh consecutive U.S. Mid-Amateur. He borrowed a friend’s club and used a spare putter to earn medalist honors with a 67 at this year’s Dickson, Tenn., sectional qualifier. Burgan, who is a pharmacist at Kroger Company, advanced to the Mid-Amateur semifinals in 2010 and the quarterfinals in 2009.
Kenny Cook, 34, of Noblesville, Ind., was the runner-up to Randal Lewis at the 2011 U.S. Mid-Amateur. Cook, an accountant, has reached match play in all four previous Mid-Amateur appearances, including the Round of 32 last year. His wife, Lisa, qualified for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, held concurrently at Harbour Trees Golf Club, in Noblesville.
Kyle Cox, 30, of Fishers, Ind., is playing in his first USGA championship. He won the 2013 Indiana Golf Association Public Links title. Cox serves as assistant athletic director and boys’ basketball coach at Park Tudor High School. In his first year as coach, he guided Park Tudor to the Class 2A state championship and a 24-4 record. Cox, who was an assistant the previous four years, coached the state’s highest-scoring offense.
Stephen Cox, 28, of Jonesboro, Ark., is competing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur and advanced to the Round of 16 in 2012. Cox, who works as an integrated solutions manager for Legacy Equipment, was a two-sport college athlete in basketball and golf at Arkansas. His father, Steve, was a kicker in the NFL for eight seasons who played for Cleveland and Washington and booted a 60-yard field goal in 1984.
Nick Desai, 47, of West Orange, N.J., is playing in his third U.S. Mid-Amateur and his cousin (Nikhil) also qualified for this year’s championship. He was born in Zambia and played cricket and field hockey at Seaford College, in Petworth, England. Desai attended Rutgers University and was a member of the table tennis team in the early 1990s. He is a consultant for RB Allied, LLC.
Michael Dlugos,49, of West Covina, Calif., has been a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff for more than 26 years. His father, Michael, served as a deputy for 35 years, while his brother, Tim, has been with the department for 19 years. His son, Michael, recently applied for a deputy position. Dlugos is playing in his third U.S. Mid-Amateur, but first since 1998. He advanced to the Round of 32 in 1993.
Mike Dunham, 42, of Concord, Mass., is in his seventh year as goaltending coach for the NHL’s New York Islanders. Dunham, who is playing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur and first since 2007, was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 1990 and played for five NHL teams. He played in three Winter Olympic Games and won a silver medal with Team USA in 2002, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His father, Ron, is the director of golf at Teton Pines Country Club, in Wilson, Wyo.
Kenny Ebalo, 31, of Las Vegas, Nev., manages PGA Tour player Ryan Moore, a three-time USGA champion. Ebalo, who is playing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur, has caddied for U.S. Open champions Gary Player and Lee Janzen.
Dan Ellis, 25, of Lansing, Mich., is playing in his third USGA championship and is the assistant golf coach at his alma mater, Michigan State University. Ellis’ father, Dean, was the head coach at Northern Michigan University for 20 years and is now an assistant at South Dakota State University. His twin brother, Dave, is an assistant coach at the University of Central Florida.
Robert Erling, 43, of Temecula, Calif., is a financial advisor who is playing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur. He worked for Rollerblade, an inline skating company, doing promotional videos and commercials and performed with the group at halftime of the 1992 Super Bowl. Erling, who has a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo, started playing competitive golf at age 30.
Zach Fischl, 26, of Northampton, Pa., will compete in his first USGA championship near his hometown. Fischl is a 2006 graduate of Northampton Area High School and has worked as an assistant professional at Allentown Municipal Golf Course. He won the 2012 and 2013 Eastern Pennsylvania Amateurs.
Daniel Funk, 34, of Tulsa, Okla., shared medalist honors at the Lincoln, Neb., sectional qualifier to advance to his first USGA championship. Funk works as an umpire and a referee for high school sports. He has also worked as a youth counselor in a juvenile detention system and for Las Vegas casinos.
James Gallagher, 56, of Yorktown, Va., is playing in his third consecutive U.S. Mid-Amateur. He retired as a colonel from the U.S. Air Force in 2008 after 27 years of service. He piloted B-52s for 15 years before primarily controlling air strikes on enemy contacts. Gallagher, who served in Gulf Wars I and II, and Kosovo, earned a Distinguished Flying Cross, multiple Air Medals and two Bronze Stars with Valor. He had experimental back surgery in 2002 after being injured in an aircraft incident over Iraq in 1991.
Greg Hamilton, 36, of Atlanta, Ga., is competing in his first USGA championship. He is a general manager for Golfsmith International, the largest golf and tennis retailer in the United States. Hamilton, who has worked for the company since 2004, has opened stores in Florida, Alabama and North Carolina.
Doug Hanzel, 57, of Savannah, Ga., is playing in his fifth U.S. Mid-Amateur and 25th USGA championship. A physician who specializes in pulmonary critical care at Southeast Medical Group, Hanzel won the 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur. In 2012, he made USGA history by becoming the first player to qualify for match play at the Amateur, Mid-Amateur and Senior Amateur in the same year. Hanzel, who wears an insulin pump to control diabetes, was the low amateur in the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Senior Opens.
Scott Harvey, 36, of Kernersville, N.C., was a 2010 U.S. Mid-Amateur quarterfinalist and co-medalist in stroke play. He was a member of the winning USA Team at the 2014 Concession Cup and won the 2013 North Carolina Mid-Amateur. Harvey is a property manager for S&K Triad Properties. His father, Bill, played in 23 USGA championships, including 15 U.S. Amateurs.
Brian Hickey, 34, of Downers Grove, Ill., is the general manager of Lapham-Hickey Steel Corporation. He is playing in his first U.S. Mid-Amateur and second USGA championship. He once served as a body double for five-time major champion Phil Mickelson in a series of Ford commercials and advertisements.
Blake Humbles, 34, of Alta Loma, Calif., is a firefighter for the City of Ontario (Calif.). He drives the back of the ladder truck (known as a tillerman) and has delivered two babies while on the job. Humbles, who is competing in his first USGA championship, played collegiately at Nebraska.
John Hunter, 30, of Houston, Texas, is playing in his second consecutive U.S. Mid-Amateur. Hunter, a management consultant in the oil and gas industry, was a two-time all-Big Ten Conference first baseman and third baseman at Purdue University. He hit three home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in nine runs in one game against Minnesota.
Trevor Hyde, 45, of Kerville, Texas, is the president of Comanche Trace, a residential and golf community that features 27 holes. Hyde, who has served on the Texas Golf Association board of directors, is competing in his third U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Tim Jackson, 55, of Germantown, Tenn., has captured two U.S. Mid-Amateur championships. In 1994, he defeated Tommy Brennan, 1 up, at Hazeltine National Golf Club, in Chaska, Minn. In 2001, he edged George Zahringer, 1 up, at San Joaquin Country Club, in Fresno, Calif. Jackson, who is competing in his 49th USGA championship and has played in five U.S. Senior Opens, has a 34-16 Mid-Amateur match-play record. He played on two USA Walker Cup Teams (1995 and 1999).
Cully Johnston, 35, of Chicago, Ill., is a guitarist in an independent rock band (Sequoia) and also plays bass and drums. He also works at Second City, the legendary comedy theater that produced Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Bill Murray and John Belushi, as an audience services manager. Johnston, who won this year’s Cook County Amateur, made a birdie on his last hole at the North Riverside, Ill., sectional qualifier to earn a spot in his first USGA championship.
Randy Lance, 44, of The Woodlands, Texas, is playing in his first USGA championship after carding an even-par 72 to earn one of seven spots at The Woodlands, Texas, sectional qualifier. Lance, who works in the pest control industry, had been trying to qualify for 28 years (24 Amateurs, 21 Mid-Amateurs). He has caddied for Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson, Casey Wittenberg and Brandt Snedeker.
Randal Lewis, 57, of Alma, Mich., is competing in his 28th USGA championship, including 11 U.S. Mid-Amateurs and 10 U.S. Amateurs. He won the 2011 U.S. Mid-Amateur by defeating Kenny Cook, 3 and 2, at Shadow Hawk Golf Club, in Richmond, Texas. Lewis, who has a 21-7 match-play record in Mid-Amateurs, was named the Michigan Golf Association’s Player of the Decade for the 1990s and was inducted in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2009.
Kevin Marsh, 42, of Henderson, Nev., won the 2005 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at The Honors Course, in Chattanooga, Tenn. A commercial real estate developer, Marsh is playing in his 11th Mid-Amateur and owns a 20-8 match-play record in this championship. In addition to his 2005 title, he advanced to the semifinals twice (2007, 2013) and the quarterfinals in 2004.
Matthew Mattare, 28, of Jersey City, N.J., reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur, his first USGA championship, and was the stroke-play medalist last year at the Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.). Mattare works for Morgan Stanley as an operations associate. His father, Gene, is the general manager and director of golf at Saucon Valley Country Club, the site of this year’s Mid-Amateur.
Mike McCoy, 51, of West Des Moines, Iowa, is playing in his 41st USGA championship, including 16 U.S. Mid-Amateurs. McCoy won the 2013 Mid-Amateur and became the second-oldest champion with an 8-and-6 victory over Bill Williamson at the Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.). He owns a 24-11 Mid-Amateur match-play record. McCoy was low amateur at this year’s U.S. Senior Open, finishing in a tie for 26th. An 11-time Iowa Golf Association player of the year, McCoy is a member of the Iowa Golf Association Hall of Fame.
Mac McGee, 60, of Midland, Texas, is playing in his first USGA championship. McGee carded a 73 at the San Antonio, Texas, sectional qualifier. He is the manager of McGee Drilling Corporation and is a pilot with IFR (instrument flight rules) certification. McGee won the 2012 Porter Cup Seniors Division and tied for third at this year’s Trans-Mississippi Seniors.
James Miller, 29, of Silver Creek, N.Y., is competing in his first U.S. Mid-Amateur and fifth USGA championship. His father, Allen, was a member of the 1969 and 1971 USA Walker Cup Teams who played on the PGA Tour, winning the 1974 Tallahassee Open. His mother, Cindy (Kessler), was an LPGA Tour professional who played in the 1980 U.S. Women’s Open.
Todd Mitchell, 36, of Bloomington, Ill., was the runner-up to Steve Wilson in the 2008 U.S. Mid-Amateur and is playing in his 18th USGA championship. Mitchell, who did not play college golf, was an all-Missouri Valley Conference shortstop at Illinois State. He was chosen in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Yankees and played two seasons in the organization’s minor-league system.
Michael Muehr, 42, of Potomac Falls, Va., was diagnosed with melanoma in 2003 and is the founder of Golf Pros Beating Cancer, a charitable foundation in Virginia. He underwent successful treatment and surgery. Muehr is playing in his fourth U.S. Mid-Amateur and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2011.
Jon Olson, 34, of Ankeny, Iowa, was chosen 2013-14 Class 4A golf coach of the year after guiding Ankeny Centennial High to the state title. Olson, who works in financial sales, won Iowa’s state amateur in 2012 and has claimed two IGA state mid-amateur crowns. He is playing in his first U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Thomas Olson, 68, of Omaha, Neb., is the oldest player in the U.S. Mid-Amateur field. He served on the Nebraska Golf Association’s board of directors for more than three decades and is a past president. Olson, an attorney, received the USGA’s Ike Grainger Award for 25 years of volunteer service. A 10-time club champion at Omaha Country Club, Olson last competed in the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2009.
Garren Poirier, 34, of Killington, Vt., lived in five U.S. states, Germany and Greece while his father, Bill, served in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Poirer was an all-Atlantic 10 Conference golfer at Temple University before he put down his clubs to travel. He fell in love with photography on a trip to Indonesia and started his own business in 2006. He eventually returned to golf after a four-year absence and is competing in his ninth USGA championship.
Trent Roush, 31, of Mason, W.Va., caddied for his father, Ty, at this year’s U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National, in Edmond, Okla. The father-son duo will reverse roles for the 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur. Trent, a financial representative for a life insurance company, is competing in his second USGA championship.
Michael Samp, 33, of Irving, Texas, is a reservations automation manager for American Airlines. His sister, Kristen, played in three U.S. Women’s Opens and he was her caddie in two of those championships. Samp is competing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur.
John Sawin, 29, of San Francisco, Calif., is a four-time club champion at Merion Golf Club, in Ardmore, Pa., and served as a caddie for the 2013 U.S. Open. He left his job as a technology investment banker to play a full season of amateur golf. He qualified for this year’s U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur in the same week in July and won the 2014 Pennsylvania State Amateur at Oakmont Country Club.
Corby Segal, 43, of Santa Clarita, Calif., is making his fourth U.S. Mid-Amateur appearance. Segal, who caddies on the PGA Tour for Briny Baird and has also worked for Brandt Jobe, competed in last month’s U.S. Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mid-Amateur in 2012 and Round of 32 last year. Segal won the 2012 Burbank City Amateur by eight strokes, including a final-round 65.
Nathan Smith, 36, of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion (2003, 2009, 2010, 2012) and a member of three USA Walker Cup Teams (2009, 2011, 2013). In 2013, Smith clinched the 14th point and the Walker Cup Match with a 4-and-3 victory over Nathan Kimsey. When he won the 2003 Mid-Amateur, he became the youngest champion. In 2012, the financial specialist became the first player to win four Mid-Amateurs. Smith is playing in his 30th USGA championship and 10th Mid-Amateur. He reached the quarterfinal round of last month’s U.S. Amateur, the farthest he has advanced in that championship. He has a 41-10 USGA match-play record.
Scott Stevens, 45, of Carlsbad, Calif., spent six years in the U.S. Navy and did two tours of duty in Operation Desert Storm. He is now a sales representative for E-Z-GO Carts and Textron. Stevens is playing in his fifth U.S. Mid-Amateur and has made match play once.
Ken Tanigawa, 46, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., advanced to the quarterfinals at last year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur. Tanigawa, who is playing in his sixth USGA championship, played six years on the Japan Tour and was reinstated as an amateur in 2012. He was born in Kobe, Japan, and moved to Los Angeles at age 3. Tanigawa, who played collegiately at UCLA, runs a manufacturing business with his brother.
Brad Valois, 27, of Warwick, R.I., advanced to the Round of 16 at last year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur and was the stroke-play medalist and reached the Round of 32 in 2012. Valois, a financial planner for New York Life, won the 2013 Rhode Island Amateur and was runner-up at last year’s New England Amateur.
Jon Veneziano, 43, of Mount Dora, Fla., is playing in his 20th USGA championship and seventh U.S. Mid-Amateur. Veneziano, a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, advanced to the Round of 16 at this year’s U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and reached the Round of 32 at the 2013 Mid-Amateur.
Ted Waldrip, 44, of Arlington, Texas, is a senior staff electrical engineer for Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control Division. He received the company’s Patriotism Award in 2004 after being embedded with the U.S. Army’s 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade during combat operations in Iraq. He is playing in his second U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Todd White, 46, of Spartanburg, S.C., is playing in his 14th USGA championship and his fourth U.S. Mid-Amateur. White helped the USA to a 17-9 victory in the 2013 Walker Cup Match at the National Golf Links of America, in Southampton, N.Y. The high school history teacher secured the team’s 13th point by defeating Rhys Pugh, 4 and 3. He advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 Mid-Amateur and advanced to match play at this year’s U.S. Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Bill Williamson, 37, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was the runner-up at last year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur, losing to Mike McCoy in the 36-hole final. Williamson, an attorney, is competing in his 10th USGA championship and fourth Mid-Amateur. He was selected 2012 and 2013 Greater Cincinnati player of the year.
Steve Wilson, 44, of Ocean Springs, Miss., won the 2008 U.S. Mid-Amateur by defeating Todd Mitchell, 5 and 4, in the final at Milwaukee Country Club, in River Hills, Wis. Wilson, a gas station owner, is playing in his seventh Mid-Amateur. He advanced to the quarterfinals in 2009.
Dave Womack, 35, of McDonough, Ga., captured the 2005 U.S. Mid-Amateur by defeating Ryan Hybl, 1 up, at Highlands Golf Club (Canyon Course), in Flagstaff, Ariz. Womack, an insurance agent, is playing in his ninth Mid-Amateur. He also played in three U.S. Amateurs and the 1995 U.S. Junior Amateur.
