The layout for the championship will be a composite of the three nine-hole layouts at Ridgewood. The routing will start with Holes 1-7 of the East Nine, followed by Nos. 2-6 on the Center Nine and Holes 4-9 on the West Nine. The A.W. Tillinghast-designed course has hosted four USGA championships, including the 1974 U.S. Amateur, won by Jerry Pate, as well as the 1990 U.S. Senior Open, won by Lee Trevino by two strokes over Jack Nicklaus. It also hosted the The Barclays tournament on the PGA Tour (now the Northern Trust) in 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
Future stars of the game are born on the U.S. Amateur stage, as a total of 19 champions have gone on to win major championships at the professional level including Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods. This championship will be an opportunity to watch future stalwarts of the game such as Justin Thomas, 2018 champion Viktor Hovland, 2015 champion and 2020 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, 2015 U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who played in six U.S. Amateurs before turning professional in 2017. The last time the U.S. Amateur was playing in New Jersey was in 2000, when Jeff Quinney prevailed at Baltusrol Golf Club, in Springfield.
The starting field of 312 players for the U.S. Amateur Championship will play 18 holes of stroke play on Aug. 15 and 16, with one round at Ridgewood and one at nearby Arcola Country Club, the stroke-play co-host for the championship, after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scores. Six rounds of match play begin on Wednesday, Aug. 17 and the championship concludes with a 36-hole championship match on Sunday, Aug. 21. The winner and runner-up are exempt into the following year’s U.S. Open Championship at The Los Angeles Country Club. The championship is open to amateur golfers with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 2.4. Entries are now open at champs.usga.org. In 2021, 7,811 entries were accepted for the championship at Oakmont (Pa.)
