The USGA announced on Thursday that Philadelphia Country Club, in Gladwyne, Pa., will serve as the stroke-play co-host course for the 2026 U.S. Amateur Championship. As previously announced, Merion Golf Club, in Ardmore, Pa., will host both stroke play and all match-play rounds when the 126th edition of the championship is played Aug. 10-16, 2026.
Philadelphia Country Club (PCC) was founded in 1890, making it one of the oldest country clubs in the United States. PCC was the seventh member club of the USGA and was one of the four original founding clubs of the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP), the oldest regional golf association in the country.
Working in conjunction with Howard Toomey, William S. Flynn provided the design for the club’s Spring Mill course, which opened in 1927. In August 2022, PCC members approved a full-scale restoration of Flynn’s original design, which will include rebuilding of all course bunkers, greens and tees and re-grassing of the fairways. Flynn expert Jim Nagle of Forse Design was selected to oversee the restoration that began this year and will conclude in 2025.
“Merion Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club have a long history of partnership dating back to the 1890’s,” said Herb Miller, president of Philadelphia Country Club. “On behalf of our entire membership, I would like to thank Merion and the USGA for selecting our club as co-host for this prestigious national championship. We are honored and excited about having the best amateur golfers in the world play our soon-to-be newly restored William Flynn golf course.”
The 126th U.S. Amateur will be the sixth time the USGA visits the property, with PCC having previously hosted the 1899 U.S. Women’s Amateur, won by Ruth Underhill, who defeated notable PCC member Margaret Fox in the final; the 1939 U.S. Open, won by Byron Nelson in a playoff; the inaugural 1949 U.S. Girls’ Junior, won by Marlene Bauer; the 2003 U.S. Women’s Amateur, won by Virada Nirapathpongporn; and co-hosted the 2005 U.S. Amateur, won by Edoardo Molinari.
Merion will be hosting its record 20th USGA championship and seventh U.S. Amateur. Molinari overcame an early 3-hole deficit to defeat Dillon Dougherty in the 2005 U.S. Amateur. In 2013, Justin Rose outlasted Phil Mickelson in a memorable U.S. Open. Most recently, the USGA Team earned a resounding 15½-4½ victory in the 2022 Curtis Cup Match, as Rachel Kuehn delivered the clinching point for the second consecutive year.
The U.S. Amateur’s starting field of 312 competitors will play 18 holes of stroke play on Aug. 10 and 11, one round on each of the two courses, after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scores. Six rounds of match play begin on Aug. 12 and the championship concludes with a 36-hole championship match on Aug. 16. The winner and runner-up are exempt into the following year’s U.S. Open Championship.
The 2023 U.S. Amateur will be contested at Cherry Hills (Colo.) Country Club from Aug. 14-20. Nearby Colorado Golf Club will serve as the stroke-play co-host course.
