Ji earned her place in the field at the very last minute, winning the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play at Shadow Creek four days before the start of the championship. Ji defeated LPGA Tour rookie Ayaka Furue, of Japan, in the 18-hole final for her 10th professional win and sixth on the LPGA Tour. Ji claimed the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open at Saucon Valley Country Club in dramatic fashion, holing a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to edge Candie Kung by one stroke. It came a year after she claimed her maiden LPGA Tour title in the Wegmans LPGA. Her last victory prior to the Match Play was the 2019 Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions. Besides her U.S. Women’s Open triumph, Ji owns six other top-10 finishes in majors, including a share of second in the 2012 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and a tie for third in the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open. This is her 15th U.S. Women’s Open start.
