Classroom instruction engages apprentices to become critical thinkers through active reflection and participation in a professional learning community. Apprentices attend class at Sandhills Community College or Horry Georgetown Technical College where USGA Agronomists, university scientists, industry professionals, and golf course superintendents lead apprentices through content anchored in the on-course experience gained during the apprenticeship. Classroom instruction includes:

  • An introduction to the game and turfgrass management
  • An introduction to soil, plant, and water science
  • Continuing exploration in pest management, fertility, and mathematics of turfgrass maintenance.
  • Advanced professional development in leadership and personnel management
