As the USGA Green Section celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020, we are preparing for an exciting week at the Golf Industry Show (GIS), happening January 25 - 30 in Orlando, Fla. We invite you to visit us in BOOTH 1413 to meet our team, which will include regional agronomists from around the country. Joining us this year will be: Chris Hartwiger (Director, Course Consulting Service) Darin Bevard, (Director, Championship Agronomy), Paul Jacobs and Elliott Dowling (Northeast Region), Steve Kammerer and Addison Barden (Southeast Region), John Daniels and Zach Nicoludis (Central Region) and Brian Whitlark and Cory Isom (West Region). You will also have the opportunity to meet members of our Education and Outreach and Products teams, and to learn more about new and exciting offerings coming in 2020.

Our booth will offer opportunities to learn more about the USGA Green Section's rich history of serving the game and advancing the conditioning of golf courses. From interactive quizzes and exhibits to software demos, you'll definitely want to prioritize visiting us. In addition to our booth, we are proud to offer the following opportunities to connect with our staff at GIS. Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you in Orlando!

Regrass Those Fairways! Save Costs and Improve Playing Conditions (1170-01) (0.35 edu. points)

Improved turfgrass species are readily available, but golf courses have been slow to undergo regrassing projects due to concerns with disruption. This seminar will focus on why fairway regrassing is beneficial and how to execute a successful project at your facility that will result in improved playing conditions, cost savings and fewer maintenance inputs. Presented by Elliott Dowling (Northeast) and Zach Nicoludis (Central).

The ASGCA Winter Meeting at GIS

The American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) is hosting a day-long, multi-presentation seminar for architects, superintendents, builders and all other golf development industry professionals. As part of that program, Dr. Cole Thompson, assistant director of USGA Green Section Research, will be presenting on the Natural Capital Project. Since 2017, the USGA has supported research with the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment to better understand the value that golf courses provide communities. The focus of the research is to compare golf courses to other land uses based on ecosystem services such as the ability to provide pollinator habitat or to mitigate urban heat islands. As part of the research, scientists have developed strategies to estimate the ecosystem services golf courses provide in several U.S. cities.
