Chris Hartwiger

Director, USGA Course Consulting Service

Chris Hartwiger is based in Birmingham, Ala., and is the director of the Green Section’s Course Consulting Service. Prior to his current position, he worked as an agronomist in the Green Section’s Southeast Region consulting with golf facilities in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee with the goal of helping superintendents develop the best management program possible for their location. He enjoys speaking to industry-related groups and writing articles for various turfgrass publications.

A native of Virginia, Chris brings an understanding of golf course management and its challenges to his current position through his agronomic experience and a love of the game. An avid golfer, Chris has been fortunate to caddie in numerous USGA championships for his wife Kathy, the 2002 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion, and to introduce his two children to the game of golf.

Before joining the USGA in 1995, Hartwiger received a bachelor’s degree at the College of William and Mary and a master’s degree at North Carolina State University. While at North Carolina State, he completed a thesis investigating the effects of lightweight roller use on bentgrass putting greens.
